Heat pumps are used for heating purposes. The primary application is heat pump heating for heating buildings, drinking water heating, generating process heat and use in tumble dryers. The heat pump cycle is also used for cooling (e.g. in refrigerators or air conditioning). In contrast to the heat pump, in the cooling process the heat removed from the room to be cooled is the useful energy, which, together with the drive energy, is dissipated into the environment as waste heat.
